Deconstructing Kansas

This is probably old news, but I just came across Larry Bartels’ essay,”What’s the Matter with What’s The Matter With Kansas,” (PDF) via Eric Alterman’s “Corrupt, Incompetent, and Off-Center”, (Alterman’s blog). I haven’t had a chance to read the Bartels essay (it’s my afternoon Metro read), but hopefully I’ll have some comments later tonight or tomorrow.

In other news, I’m planning to catch The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till and maybe The War Within this weekend.

I enjoyed that Alterman blog post too. Earlier this week he posted a letter on his blog from some guy in Decatur.

When I remember to read it, Altercation is one of my favorite high-profile blogs. I missed the letter you mentioned, but it’s nice to see Decatur represent.

The “Kansas” essay is interesting in that the author basically refutes Frank’s thesis regarding eroding working-class support for Dems. According to his stats, in fact, quite the opposite is happening. Instead, the loss of support for Dems can be attributed to the party’s loss of the “Solid South,” when most southern states were dominated by one party.

“War Within” was also, interesting, by the way.

The Decatur guy reference was tongue in cheek. It was me. Anyway I read Alterman every day. He has enough variety in his blog to make it worthwhile.
