Blog Surfing Can Cause Unexpected Flashbacks

Via Adrian Miles, I just came across Byron Hawk’s blog. I met Byron, now an assistant professor at George Mason, about five or six years ago at a Popular Culture conference in San Antonio, after which we attended “Heavy Metal Fest 1997” at the White Rabbit.

For a number of reasons (including Heavy Metal Fest 1997), this was a particularly memorable conference. San Antonio had some of the best restaurants I’ve ever encountered during a conference (especially all the local places just a short walk from the over-commercialized Riverwalk). And in an odd coincidence, memebers of the Orlando Magic basketball team were staying in the conference hotel….

Unbelievable. How did you remember the name of the club and the metal fest? Details long purgued from my memory to make room for more information. It was a great conference!

Hey, the White Rabbit made quite an impression.
I think it’s partially the fact that I didn’t attend very many other Heavy Metal Fests, but the “white rabbit” references in “The Matrix” always reminded me of that night…

(I sometimes make these weird associative leaps…)

Definitely remembered going to the show. Remembered the horror stories about the lack of music in Lafayette 🙂 Didn’t remember the name of the club or that is was a “metal fest.” Probably because I’ve been to so many they all blur together 😉

I think I remember it so well because of the unfamiliarity, the fact that I was in a different city (one that actually had live music venues). That’s actually been one of the big selling points of living in Atlanta, although I haven’t had a chance to see nearly as many shows as I would have liked.
