Monday Links
Shocked to see how long it has been since I posted anything, but I’ve been busy with wedding preparation, evaluating documentaries for a jury, and participating in recruiting activities at my university. Hoping to pick up the blogging pace soon. For now here are a few links:
- David Poland takes the pulse of the Hollywood economy, once again suggesting that Netflix’s role in driving digital distribution is overstated. As Poland points out, industry goals and interests often lag behind the technological possibilities.
- On a related note, Sony is exploring the idea of making digital downloads of some of their movies available at a lower price than physical DVDs. The CNET article also addresses the continued challenge of getting customers to pay to own pixels, when they are available elsewhere for cheap (or virtually free) rental.
- Netflix is expanding their streaming content in Canada, making more Paramount films available.
- Girish offers some interesting reflections on the quality of Netflix’s streaming video and points to an article by David Kehr (note: NYT article) that also explores the “decline” of the DVD.
- David Bordwell announces the release of his latest book, Minding Movies: Observations on the Art, Craft, and Business of Film, co-written with Kristin Thompson, which draws from and builds upon essays published in their blog.
